Full Text
We hope the federal party will not be charged with the want of a spirit of conciliation, if they lose the support of the present nomination of the democratic party, for Governor and Lieutenant Governor.
The gentlemen now offered for our support have been tried by their own friends, and dropped by the national administration with respect to the President and the most respectable portion of his cabinet; therefore, we would manifest our disapprobation of their conduct towards our opponents, we should not by withdrawing their confidence from these gentlemen.
It is notorious, that it was many months after Mr. Crowninshield resigned, but his treatment had been ardently desired and called for by his party. And Mr. Austin, after having been treated by them with unmerited ingratitude for the last ten years, has had no small share of commiseration and assistance from the federal party.
So clearly was this the case, that the democratic party have paid these gentlemen a splendid and insincere compliment, but real insult. We cannot then but view this nomination as a withdrawal of their confidence, or of the inferior offices in the government that they do not esteem them worthy of anything in the national government, but that they think them qualified to be held up for the offices of Governor and Lieutenant Governor of a State.
This is designated as an empty compliment to them. They mean it as a sneer on the state governments, when they know they shall not succeed, or do not care if they do not, as they are very well fitted to fill the subordinate and very inferior stations in the national government, and to insinuate that men who are not qualified for anything better? - Repertory.
