NEWPORT. Whilst sitting by the window, a morning or two since, at the breakfast table, we discovered the delicate fingers of some fair stranger-lady pinning to the inner side of our garden fence, something in the shape of a letter. A curiosity as natural to the male as the female sex, led us to the spot to ascertain what the contents of the paper might be. It is scarcely necessary to say that we were gratified in finding it to be a communication selected from the Tribune, a paper printed in Boston, containing some highly flattering remarks upon the climate of our Island, and the many advantages Newport possesses to yield enjoyment to the rational and intelligent sojourner, during the sultry heats of summer. We would readily affix a communication box to the fence, and make there a lattice, to facilitate communication, if we could but be assured that our correspondent would continue to bestow on us similar favors during her temporary residence in Newport. We subjoin the communication as follows.

From the Boston Tribune.

NEWPORT.--The island whereon it stands, is one of the most favored spots on the earth, in regard to climate, soil, and inhabitants. The waving lines of the landscape, or gentle undulations, high cultivation, and neat enclosures, give Rhode-Island a resemblance to the best countries in England. The productions of the soil, and of the sea, are excellent & cheap. With any people but ourselves, Newport would thrive, for the very reasons that have checked its growth. A town thus situated, would in many countries be sought from preference by people from the distant parts. But we have not many of those truly independent individuals, "who invest a modicum of their gains in annuities that, happen what may in commerce and manufactures, will place them beyond the reach of vicissitudes."

Beyond the sphere of actual want, "We have, in our own estimation, never so much that we can invest a surplus in annuity. Our spirit is adventurous—and we must—'double, double,' till all is lost by the idle tempting of fortune. A good house with a garden; may be purchased in Newport, for the annual rent of one in Boston, and if a family can content themselves under salubrious skies, in good society, and with the best supplies for the table, at a rate without a parallel in this country, they can go to no better place than Newport.—The town is by some called dull—but it is by those travellers, that, wherever they go, "find all barren." It can never be dull except to the vicious or the stupid.
