Quite an excitement was produced yesterday morning by the arrival of Mr. Cushing, the first American Minister to China, whose arrival at Mexico was announced a few days since. He reached this port yesterday morning in the barque Eugenia, from Vera Cruz, in 19 days, in fine health—not having had an hour's sickness since he left the country. From China he brought no general news, beyond the arrival at Macao, on the 13th August, of the French Minister, M. de Lagrance, in the frigate La Syrené. M. de is accompanied by a very numerous suite, far exceeding that of any previous embassy to China. He is also attended by a strong squadron, under the command of Vice Admiral Cecille, consisting of the frigates Cleopatra and Syrené, the corvettes Alcmène and Victorieuse, and the war steamer Archimède; to which is to be added the corvette Sabine, expected up soon from Singapore. The French Minister had taken a house at Macao, and it was probable he would there enter into negotiation with the Imperial Commissioner Keying for the conclusion of a treaty between France and China.
The American squadron in the East Indies, consisting of the Brandywine, St. Louis and Perry, had been particularly fortunate thus far, in having been scarcely touched by any of the fatal diseases which have occurred heretofore in some instances on board the other U. S. ships on the East India station.
