Edgecomb Quarterly Meeting.
The Spring term of this meeting commenced at Woolwich on Saturday, the 16th ult. After singing and prayer, Eld. S. Fairfield was chosen Moderator; then received Elder D. Waterman a corresponding messenger from Bowdoin Q. M. Heard the Minutes of the last session, and agreed to accept them. We are informed by the letters and reports of preachers, that it is yet rather a low time with a few of the churches in this Q. M; but we are glad to find that the brethren are generally striving to live in order, and mean, thro' grace, to pursue the heavenly journey. In some places God's children are rejoicing in the prosperity of the Redeemer's cause. Prospects are very encouraging; and during the last quarter some additions have been made. With a few exceptions, the saints are steadfast and dwell together in unity.
Eld Waterman gave an interesting and cheering account of the state of religion in some parts of the Bowdoin Q. M.
In the meeting of business in the afternoon, Elders Bailey, Hedge, Fairfield, Br. Gould and Quinnam were appointed to attend a meeting of worship to be holden at the New Meeting-house in Windsor, to commence at ten o'clock on the 10th of June next, and to continue three days. A request was received from the church at Georgetown for a committee. Elders Baily and Hedge were accordingly appointed to visit them. C. Quinnam was appointed to visit the church in Boothbay; D. Webber and C. Quinnam, the 2d ch. in Wiscasset; and Eld's. Bailey, Hedge, Fairfield, Br. Gould and Quinnam, the church in Jefferson. Eld. Webber was approbated to travel in this Q. M. Voted, that Br. Stephen Lewis' license be renewed. Agreed, that Br. John Rines, of Dresden, have the approbation of this Q. M. to improve his gift as God, in his providence, may call him. Agreed, that the July term of this Q M. be holden in Whitefield, at Mr. George Lewis' Barn, in the western part of the town. Elders' Conference will be holden on Friday the 1st of July, at 1 o'clock, P. M. Throughout the meeting of business the brethren were active in the good cause, and harmony and love prevailed among them. The meetings of worship were better attended than was expected, as the weather on Saturday and Sabbath was very unpleasant and the travelling bad. Discourses were delivered by Eld's. Lennan and Waterman, Br Raymond and Br. Swett. The preaching was solemn and instructive. At the close of the meeting in the afternoon on the Sabbath, Communion was attended to, and the presence of the Lord was enjoyed. On Monday, Br. Lewis Gould was set apart to the work of the ministry. A solemn and interesting discourse was delivered on the occasion by Elder Waterman, from Col. 4: 17. "Say to Archippus, take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it." Ordaining prayer by Eld. Lennan, charge by Eld. Hedge, Right Hand of Fellowship by Eld. Webber. This was truly a solemn, weeping season; an unusual solemnity seemed to pervade the whole assembly.
A prayer meeting was held in the meeting-house in the evening, in which God's children appeared to be distressed and remarkably desirous to see reformation; conviction fastened on the minds of the unconverted, and wanderers wept bitterly. At the close of the meeting, a number bowed before God for the prayers of the saints. Prospects now appear encouraging in Woolwich. Since the close of the Q. M. I understand that six or seven have found the Saviour, and many others are inquiring "what they must do to be saved." Elder Waterman is laboring in the place with success. We would remark that the situation of this Q. M. is more favorable at present, than it has been for many months past. Our hearts rejoice in hope that He who has displayed his power in so wonderful a manner in the Edgecomb Q. M., in years that are gone, is about to visit this region again in mercy.
Constant Quinnam, Clerk.
Whitefield, May 5, 1831.
P. S. My reason for not forwarding the above sooner, is, I have waited for information from Woolwich, in regard to the work of the Lord.
