Hartford Convention.—On the first page of to-day's paper, the reader will find rather a curious document respecting this celebrated assemblage. As it is there unaccompanied with any explanation, it may not be unnecessary to state the manner in which it comes before the public. It appears, then, according to a correspondent of the Norwalk Gazette, that previous to the trial of Whitman Mead, on information for a libel, at the late term of the Court in Fairfield, the prisoner moved for a subpoena for Mr. Sherman of Fairfield, and Mr. Goddard of Norwich, which the Court accordingly allowed, and which was served on Mr. M., but for want of time could not be on Mr. G. One of the articles charged as libellous compared a recent political meeting (in Sept. last) at Hartford with the Hartford Convention, and the prisoner proposed that a full development of the proceedings of that Convention would furnish a legal vindication of the article in question. With a view to this development, Mr. Sherman was sworn, and under the solemnity of an oath stated what is published on our first page. It is stated that the testimony was given in the presence of a large and respectable audience, of men of both political parties interested in the question. What degree of reliance is to be placed upon Mr. Sherman's testimony, all our readers probably are as well qualified to judge as ourselves. For purity of character, and correctness of conduct, perhaps there is no man in the State of Connecticut that stands higher than R. M. Sherman.
