Full Text

MISUNDERSTOOD.—With regard to outside aid and sympathy extended to the convicts in the late break, seems to have been misunderstood by the Enterprise, and possibly by others. An hour after the break occurred we knew that 29 prisoners—and no more—had escaped. There were in this city, within ten hours after the break, thirty transcripts from the records, all showing that only 29 prisoners had escaped. We gave a full list of them next morning. Yet in the face of all this, there were … men who stand high in the community, as the Enterprise quotes, who asserted their belief that more than that number had escaped. Since our item of Thursday, these men have "knocked under," so to speak, and have taken a back seat in knowledge of State Prison affairs. Except incidentally in reporting Court proceedings, we shall probably never establish the truth of our charges through these columns, but we believe they will be established in the proper Court.
