The Denver Republican this week published a statement to the effect that Andrew Norrell of North Park, who had for some time been under indictment in the federal court for grazing his cattle on the forest reserve without paying the grazing fee, had given up the fight and offered to pay the back fees. The information received by the Post indicates that this is a misstatement. Mr. Norrell was preparing to stand trial when the district attorney, at the suggestion of Mr. Pinchot, dismissed the case.
If Norrell's statement read at the Basalt meeting is correct, Norrell was more than half right and the forest supervisor very much in the wrong. Mr. Norrell is very well known to many of the cattlemen in this section, who declare he is a perfect gentleman and a law-abiding citizen.
At the Rifle meeting Fred Johnson deplored the dismissal of this case, and several stockmen have expressed their regret that it could not come to trial as a test case, but on account of the peculiarity of the case it would not have made a fair test, and we think Mr. Pinchot did just right in ordering its dismissal.
