COMMUNICATION.

The honourable and right-reverend John Smith, member of the senate of the United States from Ohio, and one of the principal secretaries of state to his imperial majesty Aaron the first, emperor of Mexico, &c. passed through this neighbourhood a few days ago. It is understood he was on his way from Florida, but whether to take his seat within the bar of the senate. or without the bar of the circuit court at Richmond, we are unable to state. The honourable gentleman used to tarry a little while in this place, when passing to and fro, and give his acquaintances the news of the day. But since his connection with the emperor has came to light, he seems to feel himself above these little condescensions. He travelled through altogether incog; so that whether he passed thro' the town, or not, or the precise time when the land was honoured with his presence, cannot be ascertained. He was attended by an escort, after the manner of the great men of the East : but we are informed he travelled rather in the style of Bajazet, than of Tamerlane. Some four or five weeks past, one Jonathan Dayton, another principal secretary of state to his Mexican majesty, travelled through this neighbourhood westward. He did not pass through Wheeling, for which we have understood he had very cogent reasons. He had just retired from the bar at Richmond, and was anxious to visit the seat of enterprise, in the neighbourhood of Cincinnati. Perhaps he wished to convey intelligence of his "safe deliverance" to his brother secretary. Friend Jonathan told some strange tales about his being indicted through the malice of the grand jury. But his cypher letters to general Wilkinson shew that he had some connection with the secretary department of emperor Aaron. We understand that Jonathan is about to sojourn eastward. It is probable he does not wish to meet the emperor on the western waters. A malicious grand jury may be impanneled even in the district of Ohio.
