Next Annual Encampment of the Connecticut Spanish War Soldiers.
The annual encampment of the United Spanish War Veterans concluded its sessions in Foot Guard armory, New Haven, Saturday. Department Commander William Lounsbury of Bridgeport called the encampment to order at 9:30 o'clock. Following the report of committees, these officers were elected: Department commander, George F. Gammons of New Haven; senior vice commander, Frank C. Johnson of Hartford; junior vice commander, James Cochrane of Willimantic; inspector, Percy A. Sawtelle of Meriden; judge advocate, Russell Porter Clark of Stamford; surgeon, Thomas F. Rockwell of Rockville; chaplain, Rev. Henry H. Kelsey of Hartford; marshal, Joseph Monaghan of Waterbury; council of administration, F. M. Woolschlager of Meriden, Nathaniel G. Valentine of Hartford, Frank Mason of New Haven, E. P. Leonard of Bridgeport, S. M. Leonard of New Britain and James H. Dyke of Derby; delegates at large to the national encampment at Tacoma, Wash., Timothy Quinn of Willimantic, Russell Porter Clark of Stamford, Timothy McCarthy of Branford and Edward E. Moseley of Hartford.
Department Commander Gammons announced the appointment of Edward L. Best and Charles G. Morris of New Haven for adjutant and quartermaster, respectively.
Mrs. Elizabeth L. McNamara of Cambridge, president general of the Ladies' auxiliary, was present at a portion of Saturday's session and delivered a fine talk, impressing upon the comrades present the necessity for the Ladies' auxiliary.
There was a contest over the place of holding the next department encampment and the Willimantic contingent won out over Stamford by a margin having a rate of three to one. Past Commander Frank P. Fenton of Augustus C. Tyler camp, No. 8, did much to turn the tide in favor of the Thread City in a few brief but telling remarks. He was also instrumental in overthrowing a measure that would be detrimental to the organization.
Commander McNamara of Tyler camp was on the nominating committee and evidence of his good work is shown by Captain Cochrane's election as junior vice commander of the department of Connecticut.
Comrade Frank M. Flagg of Putnam was in line with the Tyler bunch and assisted in making the "gunning party" successful. Robert O. Snow was assistant department adjutant and in addition to recording the minutes of the entire encampment incidentally did what he could to further Captain Cochrane's election and bring the 1910 encampment to the Thread City.
An excellent shore dinner was served about 200 delegates and guests in the afternoon at the Colonnade at Savin Rock that was followed by a sail around the harbor.
