Tuesday evening last the Coroner's inquest sat on the body of Andrew Gribbell, a cooper by trade, who was found hanging in his work shop, but how long was not exactly known, as he had not been seen since the Friday before. He had taken pains, with an iron wedge, to raise the floor-board from the upper beam, in the centre of the shop, that he might pass the cord over it, which he did by casting a loop on it, to prevent the possibility of its slipping. From what evidence could be collected respecting him, it appears that he was prompted to the perpetration of that most atrocious of crimes—SUICIDE—from the fearful forebodings of a guilty conscience; having about four or five weeks ago fled from the State of Pennsylvania, where he had seduced a young woman, whom he left pregnant; and seemed to be under the greatest apprehensions of the consequences of his perfidy. Before he committed the horrid deed, he wrote, on the slab of a desk, with chalk, these words, The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. Alas! poor wretch, to endeavour to sanction thy high handed offence against the Majesty of Heaven, by an application of sacred scripture to thy impious act, as erroneously as that of Satan's, the enemy of all righteousness, who tempted Christ himself to a similar act, by desiring him to cast himself down from the pinnacle of the Temple—for the Lord had given charge, &c.

The Jury brought in their verdict self-murder.
