Full Text

We announced some days ago, on the authority of a Mississippi newspaper, that David Holmes was a candidate to succeed Mr. Poindexter in Congress from that state. From the following letter, copied from the same paper, we are sorry to find we were led into an error in this respect.

To the Editors of the State Gazette

In your paper of the 7th inst. I am announced as a candidate to serve as the Representative from the State in the next Congress. The gentlemen who conversed with me upon this subject must have misapprehended my reply to their friendly solicitations; I did not mean to convey the idea expressed in the note alluded to, and, in order to prevent embarrassment, I take the earliest opportunity of stating to the public that it is not my wish to be brought forward for any appointment at the approaching general election.

Respectfully, your obedient servant.

April, 1819.

DAVID HOLMES.
