23,000 African Railway Strikers Back On The Job

NAIROBI, Kenya - (NNPA) Most of the 23,000 African railway workers, whose 16-day strike ended Saturday, were back on the job Sunday.

Stations, which were not operated by employees who remained on the job, mostly Asians and Europeans, were gradually reopened and services were normal Tuesday.

The main points of the settlement are that management has agreed to reconsider grievances against the European building supervisor over whom the strike began and complaints of victimizing two African workers will also be inquired into.

The investigating committee met Tuesday.

Though management does not agree with the union that six other demands, including higher pay, were a cause of the strike, it will discuss them immediately.
