MANY OF 1944 CANDIDATES ON BALLOTS AGAIN
Four years ago about this time primary candidates of the two major parties were bombarding Mingo county voters with oral and printed appeals for support. There were hot contests in both parties from magisterial districts up to the entire nation.
Some of the 1944 primary candidates have passed from the political scene but many survived to be again prominent in this year of grace.
On the 1944 Democratic primary ballots the invincible Franklin D. Roosevelt had a minor opponent, Claude R. Linger, while John Kee was unopposed for congress.
Clarence W. Meadows defeated Rush D. Holt and Blackburn Watts for governor to go on and win in the November election. This year Holt is running for U. S. Senator.
In 1944 the Democrats nominated Wm. S. O'Brien for secretary of state, W. W. Trent for superintendent of schools, Edgar B. Sims for auditor, R. E. Talbott for treasurer, Ira J. Partlow for attorney general and Joe L. Kenna for the supreme court. All won in the November election.
Local Democrats recall 1944 as the year of the big wind because of heated local races for county offices and places on the school board. Dan Chambers, the one and only feed 'em at cost sheriff, bested William Burchett, now head of the state police in the sheriff's race.
Lafe B. Chafin for prosecuting attorney and Elmer Ferrell for county clerk were unopposed. For circuit clerk W. A. Curry defeated H. T. Litton and Fred Blair won over Tennis S. Ferrell for assessor.
Ed Jude won the nomination for county commissioner over the late Hubert G. Clark, Riley Evans and Floyd Chafin.
Seeking the two nominations for the house of delegates were Toney Cline, Tom O. Curry, Clarence E. Dove, W. P. George, Ray Gibson, Roland Hall, A. L. Hill, Mart Kirk, C. F. Wickline and Glen J. Young.
Non-partisan board of education candidates were George D. Preece, J. Frank Talbott, William Adair, E. M. Browning, Elias Collins, Harry K. Curry, Dr. J. R. Farley, Alex L. Hatfield, E. B. Kirk, E. E. Dempsey and Albert (Mose) Moore.
On the Republican side Hartley Sanders won the nomination for congress over Herbert Markle and T. H. Scott.
Daniel Boone Dawson, then mayor of Charleston, defeated Raymond J. Funkhouser for governor. Edgar C. Lawson, now a candidate for governor, won the nomination for state treasurer.
W. R. Keyser, of the Welch Daily News, was nominated for state senator and J. Walter Copley was selected to oppose C. W. Ferguson for circuit court judge.
Richard Ferrell, now unopposed for assessor, defeated Emmett Keadle, Roy M. Taylor, Hank Varney and George W. New for sheriff.
W. H. D. Preece defeated Sam N. Friedberg and J. E. Wilkinson for prosecuting attorney and Wirt Hatfield won over Hubert Perry and Evan Thomas for member of the county court.
Republican candidates in 1944 for the house of delegates were Jessie Baker, W. T. Hatfield, T. W. Hope, Joe Kirk and John Pinson.
