County Bureau to Issue Blue Print Suggestions for First Floor Construction.
Farmers of Rock Island county who contemplate building new homes or remodeling old ones this spring may be able, if plans now being formulated by the home bureau organization go through, to avail themselves of blue prints furnished by the bureau. Advantages of incorporating a special room on the first floor for the transaction of business, the idea being to have it so constructed that access can be had to it from without, doing away with the necessity of bringing muddy deposits upon the wife's spotless kitchen or front parlor, will be stressed.
The proposed blue prints will embody not only the business room, but will give complete plans for a farm dwelling first floor.
The movement is part of the home management program of the Rock Island county home bureau, and is the result of a conference held by Miss Lucile Allen, bureau advisor, and Miss Marjorie Sims of the home economics department of the University of Illinois.
The services of Prof. J. W. White, supervising architect of the University of Illinois, will be called into requisition to design the first floor plan, and Miss Lita Bane, state leader, will also contribute her advice. Miss Marjorie Sims will hold another conference with Miss Allen next April, and the project will be pushed as rapidly as possible.
The idea is to make every newly built or remodeled farm dwelling cover every modern need in its construction.
Miss Allen states that in her trips throughout the county several prospective builders of farm homes have asked opinions about the proper construction of dwellings, particularly first floors and her interest in the question is due primarily to these inquiries, although such a proposition would fall naturally under the head of the bureau's home management program.
