Mayor Key Proclaims Holiday to Greet Black Crackers

They're going to start a new sports industry at Ponce de Leon Park this Tuesday afternoon around four o'clock.

Its name: Why baseball Negro Southern League baseball.of course.

No longer than Friday our esteemed Mayor Key sat down and dictated a very important document to one of his secretaries.

The result has been entirely satisfying to the men who stand behind the 1935 Atlanta Black Crackers who are to play the Memphis Red Sox on Tuesday in the opening Negro Southern League ball game for 1935 in this city.

When you think of the return of baseball to Atlanta in spectacular quantities for the first time in ten years, score an extra assist for W. B. Baker. His name doesn't appear anywhere on the score card, but he's the phantom figure lurking behind this sudden baseball resurrection just the same.

Mr. W. B. Baker has been a busy man for the past few months. What I am referring to now is his rejuvenation of baseball in this city where we long ago interred the bones of the old sport and hurried to football and basketball and tennis exhibitions. Mr. Baker in company with the eminent B. T Harvey and that great lover of the national pastime, Mr. Fortson t who at this moment lies in one of our private hospitals stricken by some ailment) has brought baseball back to town.

Mayor Key has okayed everything. The parade which starts at Booker Washington High School is set. My stablemate and reporter for this rag, Cliff Mackay before
