The most astonishing imposition of the kind perhaps in the U. States is the ferry at Elk-Ridge Landing, about eight miles this side of Baltimore. The carriage pays a heavy toll and every passenger besides, for being transported over a narrow creek almost fordable. For $4000 a bridge might be built, which, with one-fourth of the present toll would yield twenty or thirty per cent. on the cost of the bridge. Over such a creek in any town in New England a bridge would be built toll-free by the town or county.

Proposal to build a bridge at Georgetown following destruction of the third bridge at Little Falls, as suggested by a writer in the Spirit of 76; it would benefit Georgetown despite existing Washington to Alexander's Island bridge and reduce ferry proprietor influence. Criticism of high tolls at Elk-Ridge Landing ferry near Baltimore, suggesting a $4000 bridge could yield high returns with lower tolls, unlike toll-free bridges in New England.
