TRIUMPH OVER THE PIRATES

Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Pensacola to his friend in this City, dated Oct. 13.

"Capt. Jackson in the revenue cutter Louisiana has put into this port after a cruise against the pirates on the coast of Cuba, which for successful enterprise reflects distinguished credit on the officers of that vessel and even some degree of additional lustre on our naval name. On the 25th Sept. about 20 miles westward of the Moro, with the Peacock in company, they chased and captured a piratical schooner appearing by the name upon her stern, ineffectually defaced, to have been the Eliza of Baltimore, the crew of which they have brought in, and upon whom were found bills of lading and other papers of vessels robbed and perhaps devoted to a darker destiny. A few days after they gave chase to another, proving afterwards to be loaded with cotton and other articles, which was captured by Lieut. Blanchard in the boats, who then discovered a third and fourth advantageously moored in a bay or inlet—both well armed—and found one of them with as many as ten guns of different calibre, which were also carried, but the crews of all the latter escaped by shore. The boarding of the two last vessels by Lieut. Blanchard in the boats of the cutter was certainly, though unattended with any loss, on the part of his men, an act of intrepidity, as will no doubt be duly appreciated when the official account is published. If it will be so in detail: nor does remark he from the circumstances of his being a very young man and young officer. The regulations of the navy you know do permit the captain to leave his vessel. Two of the prizes were burnt: the other with the merchandise taken were sent to New Orleans. Capt. Jackson reports that the pirates had an almost incredible quantity of coffee, dry goods, and other merchandise on shore, which they burned, having previously prepared it for the purpose by surrounding it with brushwood."
