Full Text
The stock wag of the San Francisco Post describing what a certain Captain Snowball said, "tells it" thuswise:
"Drawing a long breath he said to a crowd of chippers, who sought protection from the rain in the vestibule of the big board this morning:
Dan Yost told me that Jack Mahoney assured him that Peckman had said, after a conversation with Colonel Fry who had come out of Charley Neal's office, where Bob Morrow was telling John Coleman that Doctor Fox had heard from Baron Wilkie, the latter having dined last night with Stoutenborough, that Markey Hall who was at the table, had unwittingly said that Turnbull had received a note from Budkin, in which Jimmy Hawkins was set down as having heard Leon Weill say, on the sly, that 'Smitby, the roarer,' had met Jack Wattles with Dan Cook, and that Dan had positively asserted that he overheard Con O'Connor whisper to Billy Lisle how George Congdon had a dead point from Robert Barton that Uncle Jim Fair had hinted to Mike Landers that in walking yesterday with Adolph Sutro he (Uncle Jim) was told that Grayson had guaranteed Tom Cole that Colonel Kellogg had heard that it was given out by Hank Smith that if everything filled—Belcher would go up four bits to-day. And," added the Captain as he drew another long breath, "my information coming thus direct, I advise you all to buy a little." Just then the gong rang."
