Full Text

A Peculiar Case.

The Sioux City Journal of the 2d inst. thus speaks of an old crime committed at the Bismarck levee: "Z. S. Huntley, who was mate on the steamer Niobrara last season, arrived in the city yesterday from Lyons, this state, where he has been for the past three months convalescing at the home of his brother. He is looking well, though yet showing some traces of the murderous attack made on him at Bismarck last fall. Mr. Huntley's experience is a peculiar one. He remembers nothing that happened after he sat down to warm himself in the engine room of the Niobrara until two weeks afterward, when on the way down the river on the Rosebud. The events of the next month, even after he was able to work, seem indistinct—like a dream. The story of the assault and attempted robbery have been mis-told so often that it is worth while to go over them again. One of the men on the boat had given Mr. Huntley his money to keep while the boat was tied up at Bismarck. It is supposed that the would-be murderer saw the money handed over. Mr. Huntley then went up to his room in the cabin and left the money, returning in a few minutes to the engine room, where he sat down by the fire in the forge. Here his recollections end.

After he was found on the floor of the engine room with a terrible gash across his temple, a man was arrested on suspicion, but as the evidence was not direct he was released. The fellow secured only a trifle of money by his crime."
