HARRISBURG, Jan. 13.-The Opposition members of the Legislature met in caucus at 3 o'clock this afternoon, to nominate a candidate for State Treasurer. After a brief conference, a motion was made by the friends of Mr. Moore to adjourn until 8 o'clock this evening, which, after considerable discussion, was lost by a vote of 51 to 32. This vote being regarded as a test of the strength of parties, Speaker Lawrence who had been authorized so to do, withdrew the name of Mr. Moore, and the Hon. Eli Slifer was then unanimously nominated for re-election as State Treasurer.
On the motion to adjourn the caucus until 8 o'clock, which was strenuously urged by the friends of Mr. Moore, and the vote was as follows:
Yeas-Messrs. Benson, Connell, Parker, Smith, Shaffer, (Senate,) Austin, Barnsley, Butler, Collins, Davis, Ellmaker, Goehring, Green, Gissenheim, Hoffman, Kenney, Lawrence of Dauphin, Moore, O'Neil, Pancoast, Preston, Ridgway, Rouse, Seltzer, Shepherd, Strong, Stutzman, Teller, Turner, Walker, Wildey and Williams, (House) 32.
Nays-Messrs. Finney, Francis, Gregg, Hall, Imbrie, Irish, Ketchum, Landon, M'Clure, Meredith, Palmer, Penny, Rutherford, Thompson, Yardley, (Senate,) Acker, Barlow, Baird, Bissel, Boyer, Brewster, Bryson, Burley, Cassel, Craig, Durborough, Eckman, Espy, Frazier, Gordan, Graham of Butler, Graham of Washington, Hayes, Kinney, Kistler, Lawrence of Washington, MeCurdy, McGonegal, Mann, Pearce, Pennel, Pinkerton, Presley, Proudfoot, Shaffer, Smead, Taylor, Thompson, Varnum, Wagonseller, Williston, and Wilson, (House)-54.
This vote demonstrated the strength of parties, and settled the contest.
The re-election of Col. Slifer for State Treasurer, is a just tribute to his merits, and a sensible measure in those having choice of that officer. No State Treasurer-it is admitted on all hands-has ever discharged the duties of that office with more benefit to the State, or with less suspicion of improper use of the funds in his charge.
It is of much more consequence to the people that that office be well filled, than that constant changes should increase the risk of getting a bad and faithless incumbent. The plea of "rotation" was all that was urged against him, except that his depositaries were sometimes Democratic Banks. But this also was no serious objection, so long as he transacts his business through the best and safest institutions, without requiring that all should be of one party. There was a tremendous effort made for a new man-offers of votes for Governor, U.S. Senator, &c., were unblushingly alleged to be in market-and ridiculously false allegations of the incidental profits of the office were circulated. But all were in vain. Independent members from all quarters, and friends of all the candidates for Governor, rallied around him and gave him 22 majority in caucus over all opposing candidates. At his election, on Monday last, he received 81 votes, and Judge Maynard, of Lycoming, received 41.
