At a court of oyer and terminer, held in and for the city and county of Philadelphia, 26 several sentences were pronounced; the different crimes were burglary, felony and larceny. Four for burglary, according to a former act of that state, would have been executed; but, by the new act in case of criminals made and provided at a late session of the house of assembly, they were sentenced to hard labour only; one, however, having refused the benefit of the new law, was afterwards sentenced to be executed. It is worthy observation, that 18 persons only were the subjects of the 26 sentences above mentioned, of which the notorious Arthur Mc. Garraty received four, viz. three for felony and robbery, and one for larceny; these several sentences amount to 16 years hard labour: John Butler 3 sentences; John Jones 3 ditto; and John Dougherty 2 ditto.
