CRIMINAL COURT HANDLES NUMBER OF CASES TODAY

SIX PLEAS OF GUILTY ARE RECORDED: VARIETY OF CASES HEARD DURING MORNING SESSION

When criminal court met this morning Judge J. Vining Harris heard six pleas of guilty. Four of the pleas were made by defendants charged with setting up and operating gambling devices.

Those entering pleas of guilty were Jesus Gomez, Ramon Cuesta, Manuel Sanchez and Jesus Sanchez. They were fined $50 and costs of prosecution. If fines and costs are not paid they are to serve 60 days in the county jail.

When a fine of $50 and costs is imposed and a defendant pays, instead of taking the alternative of 60 days, the amount received by the county is approximately $90 in each case.

Mittie Torres pleaded guilty to a charge of assault and battery. She had been in jail for 50 days. She was sentenced to 50 days in jail to date from the day first imprisoned. Time up, she was ordered discharged.

Eddie Pent, charged with illegal possession of liquor, pleaded guilty. Pent had about two drinks in a flask for his own use, it was shown. He was repentant after 15 days in jail and was ordered released.

The case of Ramon Oliva, charged with setting up and operating a bolita game was called for trial. This is a jury case. Of the regular venire of 18 jurors summoned yesterday, but 13 responded this morning. Five other names were ordered drawn from the box to complete the venire. Wm. F. Duval, Wm. E. Lowe, Morris Cochran, Lee Collins and John W. Carey.
