FROM WASHINGTON.
In the Senate yesterday, on motion of Mr. Grundy, the bill introduced by Mr. Clay, the day before, to modify and adjust the Tariff, was referred to a Select Committee, to be composed of seven members.
A motion was made by Mr. Dallas to lay the bill on the table, which failed, as did also a motion to refer it to the Committee on Manufactures.
Mr. Webster introduced his resolutions relative to the Tariff, which were laid on the table until to-day, when he gave notice that he would explain and support them.
On motion of Mr. Wilkins, it was ordered that hereafter the Senate take a recess from 2 to 5 o'clock every evening.
Various private bills were then read and referred-and at one o'clock the Senate proceeded to the House of Representatives, where seats were prepared for them. The two houses, in joint session, proceeded through their tellers to count the votes of the electors for President and Vice President of the United States-after which the President of the Senate proclaimed that
ANDREW JACKSON, of Tennessee
had been duly elected as President of the United States, to serve for four years from and after the 4th day of March next-and that
MARTIN VAN BUREN, of New York,
had been duly elected Vice President, to serve for the same term.
After the announcement was made, the two Houses separated and both immediately adjourned, after appointing committees to wait on the President and inform him of his election.
