The French since they occupied Lisbon, have proceeded to make great improvements in this city. The governor has ordered the cleansing and new paving of most of the streets. General Junot has ordered that the images should be melted down. A deputation of Friars waited on him, to procure a respite for a very large and favorite Saint. His answer was—"If the statue is of wood, you may throw it into the Tagus; if brass, you may break it; but if it is silver or gold, you must bring it to me, and I will melt it."
