streets ordered cleansed and newly paved; religious images ordered melted down
Event Details
The French, since occupying Lisbon, have made great improvements in the city, including the governor's order for cleansing and new paving of most streets. General Junot ordered the melting down of images. A deputation of Friars requested a respite for a large favorite Saint statue, to which Junot replied that if wood it could be thrown into the Tagus, if brass broken, but if silver or gold it must be brought to him to melt.
