Labor Year
The legislative year 1951 was the
least satisfactory in terms of progress
to the Labor field since 1947.
So the AFL Executive Council reports.
"That year (1947) the Taft-Hartley
Act was enacted by Congress and the
states went even further in their efforts
to restrict the activities of Trade
Unions," the Council said.
"This trend was reversed in 1948.
Practically no anti-Labor legislation
was passed and we made a few advances;
in 1949 and 1950 we continued
to gain.
This year 44 state legislatures met
in regular session. While a few acts
of major importance passed, for the
most part advances made were only
minor. The anti-Union measures enacted,
and the repeal of other constructive
legislation more than offset
the gains."
It is worth pointing out, however,
that Missouri scored a distinction.
The anti-Labor Madison Act has been
repealed and the "copperhead" King-
Thompson Act's validity is under
heavy fire, with little likelihood that
that anti-strike law can survive.
