Johnnie Stoehr *Another Buggy Ride

"Johnnie" Stoehr, the small son of B. F. Stoehr, 404 North Second street, is either a persistent seeker after publicity, or else there is something in the lad's makeup which makes him oblivious to all warnings, policemen's threats, and paternal thrashings.

Johnnie has taken another horse and buggy. He and his small sister Bertha were evidently out on a scouting expedition Monday afternoon, for they found a horse and buggy belonging to George Hinecker, 907 South Eleventh avenue, hitched in the shed back of Myers' grocery, at 126 East Main street. This time Johnnie was merely out on a pleasure drive, as he and Bertha drove the horse around at a very leisurely rate of speed, and were proceeding towards the Hinecker residence when Mr. Hinecker saw them near the union station. He relieved Johnnie and Bertha of their equipment and the two children came into the station to play.

Here they were discovered and questioned by Officer Wertenberger, and to him Johnnie told the story of his afternoon's adventure. He had also confessed to Hinecker that he took the horse and buggy. Wertenberger suggested to a crowd standing around that he guessed he would take Johnnie and Bertha to jail. A perceptible quiver of Johnnie's lower lip was noticeable, and a bystander suggested that he and Bertha run while the policeman was looking the other way. The officer obligingly turned his back and the two children "hiked." Asked as to why he took the horse, Johnnie merely looked blankly and offered no information.
