To the independent Voters of Fairfax County.

Fellow Citizens—The friends of Mr. Bailey—no I'm wrong—the enemies of Mr. Mercer—are attempting to play off some generalship on you, in pouring in their fire, by platoons, on the very eve of the election; thinking, no doubt, that of the friends of Mr. Mercer is silenced.

I repeat the word, the enemies of Mr. Mercer; for what dispassionate republican can will call these writers friends of Mr. Bailey, who hold him up as the democratic candidate

Sydnor Bailey a democrat!!! an ultra federalist a democrat! Tell it not on Sandy Run, publish it not at Fairfax Courthouse, or the authors of such an abuse of terms, will be laughed to scorn.

Why! every person that recalls the doings of last war knows that Sydnor Bailey not only opposed it, and the principles on which it was founded, but was the veriest scoffer at the necessary war measures; that his language was such as entitled him (had he possessed sufficient talent) to have been a delegate to the Hartford convention, where with snuff box in hand, he would have prosed about treason, with Harrison Gray Otis & Co.

Luckily, however, for Mr. Bailey, he dwelt in Virginia, and was spared that shame. Whether he now feels remorse I know not. I care not.

But, fellow citizens, mete unto Mr. B. the same reward that Mr. Otis has just received in Massachusetts—frown upon his new fledged democracy—elect him not to the councils of your country—give this federal scoffer two years more of private life, for probation—for reformation.

Thus it is, however, that, to gratify mere pique and spleen against Mr. Mercer, Mr. Bailey forsooth is to be inducted into the democratic ranks. What an anomaly!—fye! fye! Mr. "Prince William Freeholder," and Sandy Run Farmer, do not think to throw dust in the eyes of the independent voters of Fairfax—they are not to be thus gulled; and although the "unfortunate" Mr. Bailey may allow himself to be made a cat's paw of, think not so meanly of the independent Fairfax freeholders.

The "Prince William Freeholder" has pretty adroitly attacked Mr. Mercer, as not being on any of the important committees in congress; but he knows, at the same time, that the speaker nominates the different members; and he knows also that Philip Barbour is personally hostile to Mr. M. which is the real cause of his not being appointed on the important committees.

But, fellow citizens, enough has already been said on the respective merits of the two candidates—they are before you. I shall add nothing in reply to a writer who considers the "Green House" of Mr. Mercer as a damning political sin, and for which he ought to lose his election.

This smacks of the reign of terror in France, under Robespierre, whose policy it was to bring to the guillotine every person of superior talent and taste, however true to France.

Were it possible that the madness of revolution should ever rear among us that dreadful engine, the Prince William freeholder might prove a second diabolical Robespierre in destroying, like an avenging angel, "Green Houses"—

ALDIE.

The above was in type before the writer read the cool, dignified castigation given by the National Intelligencer to the scurrilous publication of the "Sandy Run" paper in the Herald—the editor of which has certainly preserved a strict neutrality in the congressional contest for the adjoining district.
