(Special to The Observer)
Hartford, June 19—The presence of fluorides in Connecticut water supplies was discussed by Warren J. Scott, S. B., in an issue of the Monthly Health Bulletin of the Connecticut State Department of Health.
The Connecticut sampling showed that the amount of fluorides present in local water supplies is so small as to have little significance. Drinking water standards of the United States Public Health Service specify that the fluoride content of water should not exceed one part per million. The Connecticut samples ranged from 0.0 to 0.5 parts per million.
The presence of large amounts of fluorides in drinking water has been associated with mottling of tooth enamel, but small amounts of it are believed to be helpful in preventing tooth decay.
Samples for the recent Connecticut survey were collected from one deep well and one surface water supply within each of the eight counties in the state. The project was conducted by the Bureau of Sanitary Engineering in cooperation with the Division of Dental Hygiene, Connecticut State Department of Health.
