The starters shape up as Tom Brewer 12-12. Frank Sullivan 13-9. Ivan Delock 14-8 who led the club in wins last year, and possibly left hander Ted Bowsfield 4-2. The veteran Willard Nixon remains a question mark.

He is suffering a sore arm which caused him to drop to a 1-7 mark last year before going on the disabled list in July.

"Brewer should win 18 or 20." Higgins declares. "He got off slowly last year after recovering from the mumps. At one point he had lost five out of six. then won seven straight."

Mike believes that the six-foot. seven-inch Sullivan is capable of winning more than 13 games.

Bowsfield. who had a 2.60 earned run average at Minneapolis last year. should benefit by the half-season he put in at Boston.

Dave Sisler 8-9 may work as both a starter and reliever and Higgins thinks he will get some mileage out of Herb Moford. a 29-year-old right hander who spent nearly a decade in the minors before going to Detroit last year.

Boston got him from the Tigers in exchange for catcher Lou Berberet. Higgins says his 4-9 record at Detroit is misleading.

MANNED BY VETERANS
The infield is manned by veterans with the possible exception of shortstop where Don Buddin's job has been threatened by Jerry Pumpsie Green. a switch-hitting rookie. Buddin's lifetime mark at Boston is .238. Green hit .253 at Minneapolis last year.

Frank Malzone, the American League all-star third baseman last season. is set for full-time duty at that spot with Ted Lepcio in reserve. It will be Runnels at second and Higgins believes the Texan will keep well above the .300 mark.

"He's no .230 hitter," Mike snorts when reminded of Runnels's big slump at Washington in 1957. Lepcio could be used here too if Runnels needed a rest.

Williams and Jensen are back in left and right fields. but there's scramble on for the center field spot vacated by Piersall. Higgins rates it a tossup between the veteran Jim Busby. whom the Red Sox obtained from Baltimore in exchange for Billy Klaus last December, Gene Stephens and Marty Keough.

Higgins calls Geiger a "good-looking prospect" and also has Billy Consolo on hand. for utility roles.

The catching job once again belongs to the veteran Sammy White with Pete Ruel behind him. Haywood Sullivan, who says. he had fully recovered from a slipped disc, is third in line, according to Higgins.
