"Before I conclude my Letter I must mention one Thing which will divert you. This Day Mr. Alderman Kirkman arrived here from London; immediately on the News a vast Number of People assembled before his Door, and demanded the Reason of his voting against the Liberty of the Subject, particularly against the Lord Mayor of London convening a Common Hall of the Livery in 1769, and protesting against the Remonstrance presented to the Throne last Year. He did not think fit to give any Answer to their Request; upon which the Town caused a large Bonfire to be immediately made, and a Gibbet erected, where the Effigy of Mr. Kirkman was carried in a Cart, and, after hanging the usual Time, was committed to the Flames. As long as I have known Coventry I never saw such a Concourse of People assemble together as met on this Occasion."
