Full Text

A Visit to the Penitentiary.

Gov. Porter, accompanied by State Superintendent Trousdale and Maj. Jos. Horton, paid an official visit to the penitentiary yesterday, at the invitation of the lessees, and made a minute examination of the workings therein. All was found in good and highly commendable order, such being the verdict of the visitors.

Of late the policy of punishing refractory convicts with the lash has been largely dispensed with, and the change has wrought about a more satisfactory condition of things. The prisoners are assigned daily tasks, and the majority, by more attentive and cheerful industry, often finish an hour or two before what has been heretofore the time for leaving off.
