HAMPTON MAN SERIOUSLY HURT BY HIT-RUN DRIVER

Lester Hawkes received a fractured skull, and his wife, Hattie, a broken forearm when the wagon in which they were riding Sunday night was struck by a hit and run automobilist and they were thrown to the road. Charlie Fitts, the other occupant of the horse-drawn vehicle, escaped uninjured. The accident occurred between 9 and 10 o'clock as the three local people were just emerging in their wagon from the lower driveway of their home to the state road. Immediately after the wagon was wrecked, Fitts assisted the injured man, who was in a semi-conscious condition, to his home. Dr. A. D. Marsh then drove the injured couple to the Windham Memorial Hospital, where it was discovered that Mr. Hawkes was in a critical condition. It is expected that Mrs. Hawkes will be able to return home soon. Although Mr. Fitts did not get the registration number of the automobile, he said that it bore Florida markers. The two wheels on the left side of the wagon were torn off, and the horse broke away and ran wildly up Hampton Hill. George Willis heard the runaway coming up the hill but was unable to halt the animal. The next day, Paul Navins and Jack Murphy found the horse on Ralph Colvin's farm.
