Full Text

GREECE—A SONNET.

[From Blackwood's Magazine.]

Land of the Muses, and of mighty men!
A shadowy Grandeur mantles o'er thy scene
As mounting airs, thy pictured scenes are seen
When either's canopy to recur, and new
The very emphasis pause from the wing
In evidence, and slant not here to stray.—
Beautiful Greece! more glorious in decay
Than other regions in the flush of spring;
Thy palaces are tenantless: the Turk
Hath quenched the embers of thy holy fire:
Thy temples now are crumbling to the plain.
For time hath sapped, and man hath helped the work.
All cannot perish—thy immortal mind
Remains a balm encircling round mankind.
