Last Lord's Day as Capt. Cable of this Town was sailing the Sound for New-York, with a cargo of Molasses & Sugar, the Vessel overset by a sudden gust of wind; and being deeply loaded, the hatch-way also open, he went down to the bottom, in about 10 or 12 fathom of water, off against the town of Fairfield, at three or four miles distance from the Shore. The Capt. with two young Men, who belonged to the Vessel were saved by getting into the Longboat but Mr. Buckingham St. John, a Passenger on board, keeping hold of the upper Gunwale of the Vessel went to the bottom with it, and was unfortunately drowned. This melancholy accident happened about four o'clock in the afternoon. The top of the Mast remaining a little out of the water, the Vessel was found, towed into Fairfield Harbour about 5 o'clock afternoon the following Tuesday, and the Body of Mr. St. John was taken up from the place of the Gunwale of the Vessel, where he had sunk down with it. This unfortunate young Gentleman had just passed the 25th year of his age; was born of a good family at Norwalk in this Colony: was educated at Yale College in this town; at which he took his first Degree, September 1768.
