During the past week County Commissioner Mahoney's bridge crew finished repairing the piers of the Kootenai river bridge at Libby. Before starting the work Mr. Mahoney took some pictures of one of the piers that was in the worst shape. The pictures show a highly dangerous condition. The gravel had been washed away to such an extent as to uncover about a foot of the top of the piling driven down for the foundation of the pier.
These piling, it is said, were only about five feet long. On top of the piling the base of the concrete pier was badly crumbled and weakened.
It is very doubtful if the pier could have again withstood high water or the heavy bombardment of breaking up ice. Evidently the repairing was done just in time.
Sheet steel was placed around the base of the piers leaving three or four feet between the steel and the pier. This space was then filled with rock and cement, which makes the pier practically as good as ever.
