Coy Trial Marked by Venue Move.
Special to The Monitor.
EDINBURG, Feb. 1—Shades of the late "Millionaire Sheriff" A. Y. Baker haunted the Hidalgo county courthouse today as the motion for change of venue entered by Charlie Coy, Edinburg rancher, was being heard before Judge Bryce Ferguson in criminal district court.
Coy is under an indictment charging theft and forgery.
Prejudice Is Charged
Three witnesses testified this morning that Coy, a special deputy sheriff during the "reign" of the late Sheriff Baker, could not receive a fair trial because of the "prejudice" which exists in the minds of people against members of the old county "ring."
N. L. Reyna, residing north of Edinburg, said the defendant would not be tried fairly because of his connection with what he called "the old clique." T. M. Hartman, Edinburg, former political office aspirant, declared that in his opinion no "old line" Democrat could be given an unbiased trial.
Manuel Samano Jr., Hidalgo, added his words to these of the preceding witnesses.
They were also introduced by Defense Attorney Sid Hardin.
District Attorney Rogers Kelley cross-examined each.
Court adjourned at 5 p. m. and will reconvene about 9 a. m. Monday.
The defense will offer more witnesses at that time.
