Full Text
When men are fit, truly remarks the New York Dutchman, or nothing else, they commonly look to the interests of their country. Out of every hundred office holders in the country, you will not find over three per cent. who could make a living, even if they owned the fee simple of a gold mine. Men will doubt their fitness to open a broker's shop, peddle clams, or act as switch tender to a railroad; but who ever saw the individual who distrusted his ability to take charge of a Custom-House, or fill a foreign Embassy?
