Gross Carelessness on the Part of a
Poplar Street Builder Nearly Causes
a Serious Mishap--Anxious for Work
-Paragraphs.
Through the sheerest luck, Mr. Samuel
Johns, an attache of Kremer's establishment,
is now able to mingle with his
friends and attend to his business duties.
About 8:30 o'clock last night, as a gentleman
arrived at the corner of Carroll avenue
and Poplar street to come up town,
he noticed a horse and buggy coming
down Poplar. The horse was in a slow
trot, and the gentleman also noticed that
the vehicle had no occupant. The animal
was easily secured and held until Mr.
Johns, who had been out driving, came
up, returned thanks, and resumed his
pleasure ride. How he came to be left is
told in his own language, and shows un-
warranted looseness in obeying ordinance
regulations. A short distance above Car-
roll avenue, on the north side of Poplar
street, a new brick house is being erected.
In front of the building, and on the
street, is a large mortar box. The night
was dark, there was no danger signal on
the box, and the horse and buggy became
entangled with the obstruction. Mr. Johns
was thrown out, and the wheels of the
vehicle passed over the right side of his
neck, inflicting painful bruises. Owing
to the presence of sand in the box, Mr.
Johns fortunately escaped serious injuries
from the headlong plunge.
