On Saturday evening last, a very melancholy accident happened in this harbour. The brig Loyal Briton, Capt. Joseph Salter, arrived from Dominica, after a very tedious passage of upwards of 40 days; he with his vessel's company, had for some days been at short allowance. The fatigues and difficulties they had undergone in the voyage, caused an unusual joy at finding themselves safe in the harbour. Capt. Salter seized the mate by the hand, congratulated him that all their troubles were now at an end—and then going suddenly forward. to give some directions about coming to an anchor, his foot tripped in the buoy rope. and he fell instantly overboard; and though every exertion was made to save him, he was unfortunately drowned. Perhaps few instances can be recollected more truly melancholy.—After a series of great hardships, he had unexpectedly reached the port—the hope in a few moments of receiving the embraces of his friends. had banished all the difficulties of the voyage.—In an instant the scene changes, and puts an end to every earthly expectation,—As a son and a brother, his death will be long lamented; whilst his numerous acquaintance here will join his relations, in the tears of sympathy.
