Full Text
On Sunday last, Mary, the youngest daughter of Mr. Joseph Proctor, Jr. aged eight years, was left in company with her sister, about ten years of age, in a room where there was a cooking stove, the doors of which happened to be open. The child, in reaching for something across the stove, caught her apron on fire, and her sister not having sufficient presence of mind to envelop her in something that would extinguish the flames, ran to a neighboring house for assistance, and before it could be obtained, being eight or ten minutes, the child was literally roasted alive! She survived about twenty hours in great distress, retaining her senses perfectly to the last. This melancholy event adds one more to the catalogue of deaths by burning, in consequence of clothing children with cotton garments in the season of the year when it is necessary they should be near the fire.
