To the Editor of the Spirit of Jefferson:
Sir:—In punishment for some sin committed by me or some of my ancestors, I was put forward as a candidate at the last election in this county. I have, I think, fully expiated the offence by the amount of abuse I have received, and the exemplary patience with which I have endured it. There is one point, however, on which I want to be fully understood, and I deem it of sufficient importance to move me from my usual apathy in political squabbles. It has been falsely and maliciously said that I intended to mix blacks and whites in the same school houses. This I pronounce as false as the heart of the scoundrel who invented it, and consequently for more false than the realms of his Satanic Majesty. I consider this disclaimer due to myself and friends, but will hereafter treat the matter with silent contempt. I will conclude by praying that my traducer may some day become a candidate himself, which in my opinion is the greatest punishment that indignant justice could inflict on any criminal.
JOSEPH BARRY.
