INVESTIGATE W.P.A.F.B.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 (INS)- The senate preparedness subcommittee today is readying a probe of air force procurement "fraud and favoritism" at huge Wright-Patterson Air Base, Dayton, Ohio.
Chairman Johnson (D) Tex., announced that public hearings will begin Dec. 19 on charges that air force officers awarded contracts in return for "gifts, money, entertainment and jobs."
Johnson declared the subcommittee will determine how much money the government has paid out in deals "that can be traced directly or indirectly to fraud and favoritism."
The Senator added that if the hearings indicate "widespread" fraud and corruption at the Dayton base a full-scale investigation will be launched into all operations at the establishment.
The Air Force said on Nov. 23 that it had set up rigid new regulations to guard against a recurrence of influence peddling, after it became necessary to cancel 19 million dollars in contracts because of "purchasing irregularities."
Wright-Patterson Field has 32,000 military and civilian employes, and contracts totaling 12 and one-half billion dollars were let there in the 1951 fiscal year.
