What is this article about?

Letter from Copenhagen reports anticipated major political changes in Denmark by January 17, involving banishment of nobles like Count Rantzau and others accused of plotting against the king. Speculation points to the king's restoration of power, possibly influenced by the Queen Dowager's jealousy or the Landgrave of Hesse Cassel with London support.

Full Text

Extract of a Letter from Copenhagen, November 16.

We have Reason to expect a much greater Alteration before the 17th of January next than that which happened on the 17th of January last. How this Alteration will be, and upon what Footing our Government is to be set, is still a profound Secret; but it may easily be conjectured, seeing all those who had a Hand in the Event on the 17th of January last are at present banished from Court. Some of them were bid privately to retire, and some were publicly banished, with Scandal. The following, who were the Heads of the Complot, are entirely banished: Count Rantzau, Count Eichtadt, Lieutenant General Koeller Banner, who undertook to attack her Majesty in her Bed, and Lord Chamberlain Cassenskjold. Though different Reasons are given for the Disgrace of these pretended Friends to their King and Country, some are of Opinion that the King has been esteemed as a mere Cipher in the Course of this Year, but that he has now found a Way to restore his Sovereignty again; but, not to scandalize his Mother and Brother, he will show no other Resentment than that of banishing these Traitors from Court. Others are of Opinion that the Queen Dowager herself has been jealous at seeing these Noblemen govern the whole Danish Empire, without consulting her Advice. Count Rantzau has been forbidden the Court by her Majesty, and received Orders to retire to his Estates in Holstein; but, notwithstanding these Orders, the Count, knowing his Friends to have the Government, went to Funen, which is the very Heart of the Danish Empire, and that too without consulting her Majesty's Will and Pleasure, which enraged this jealous Queen. But the best Opinion is, that the Landgrave of Hesse Cassel, who is Brother in Law to his Majesty (the Princess, his Consort, being Sister to his Majesty both by Father and Mother's Side) seeing the Ruin of the Danish Empire, and assisted, as some believe, by the Court of London, is the true Cause of restoring his Majesty to his Sovereign Dignity, and banishing his Enemies from Court.

Event Details

Anticipated major alteration in Danish government by January 17 next, following banishment of plotters from January 17 last, including Count Rantzau ordered to Holstein but going to Funen, enraging the Queen Dowager. Speculation on king's restoration of power without scandalizing family, or Queen Dowager's jealousy, or influence of Landgrave of Hesse Cassel possibly aided by London court.
