"The Militant Group"
"Speaking in Akron last Sunday, Winthrop Rockefeller gave a good answer to a question as to the speed with which race relations can be improved.
"He said that patience is necessary because the deep-seated prejudices and customs of millions of people can't be changed overnight.
"However, he added, there are times when militancy is necessary--when someone must speak out boldly and firmly against specific discriminations which are unjustifiable.
"In the continuing fight to achieve for the Negroes in the United States the rights which have generally been denied them, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has been a leader for many years.
"It is quick to point the finger at injustices. It provides advice and counsel for individuals whose rights have been trampled on.
"The NAACP is the indispensable militant influence in the long effort to improve race relations. In this role, it sometimes finds itself associated with unwelcome bedfellows--radical groups which seek to exploit any departure from American principles. It is to the credit of the association's leaders that they have consistently and successfully fought off the influence and subversion of groups like the Communists which are more interested in creating tensions than in solving them.
"With both white and Negro people in its membership, the NAACP has shown that it is possible to be militant without being radical; to fight hard within the bounds of our laws and the Constitution.
"The association is now engaged in its annual membership campaign. This is its chief means of financial support. Those who sympathize with its high purpose and effective efforts will want to join."
