In the 43d Congress, the next one, the House will have 292 members or 49 more. Of these the Radicals will have about 208 members or 70 per cent and the Democrats, 84 members or 30 per cent. This restores the Radical two-thirds majority.
The present Senate is composed of 57 Radicals and 17 Democrats. The Senate of the Forty-Third Congress will have 55 Radicals and 19 Democrats, a gain of two Democrats. Five of the Radicals are Liberals who may be expected to vote with the Democrats, making 50 Grant supporters and 24 opposition.
This still leaves a two-thirds majority for the Radical party in the Senate.
