HORRIBLE DEATH.

Extract of a letter to the editor, dated Lyme, Ionia county, Michigan, March 30, 1838 :

"An inquest was this day held, about eight miles north of this place, over the bodies of three persons, nearly consumed by fire, in the body of the log house in which they lived. The unanimous verdict of the jury was that they were all most horribly murdered by some person or persons unknown. The presumption is strong, however, that the awful deed was committed by the Indians in that neighborhood." The bodies found were the wife and two children of Mr. Ansel D. Glass, who removed into this country last fall from the north part of the state of New York. And it is supposed (with much good reason) that Mr. Glass must also be murdered somewhere in the vicinity of his house. Mr. Glass lived about four miles from any white inhabitants, and none of the nearest inhabitants had seen him or any of his family, since the 14th instant, till on the 28th, Mr. Hiram Brown, one of the nearest settlers, went there on business, and the bodies of the woman and two children were found as above stated.

No trace could be found of the body or bones of Mr. Glass.

Mr. Glass was known to have a good rifle, two axes and two barrels of flour, packed in a box, in one corner of the room, and no trace of either could be discovered; which circumstances led to the conclusion, or at least the strong presumption, that they were massacred by the Indians, and the house set on fire. Several locks of the woman's hair were found near the door of the house, with the skin and flesh attached to them. A handkerchief was also found besmeared with blood. A general turnout of the citizens is expected to endeavor, if possible, to discover the body of Mr. Glass."—Detroit Free Press.
