Of all the infamous and corrupt legislatures ever in existence, the republican legislature of this state, just adjourned, was probably the worst. Members openly sold themselves for a consideration, and cussed themselves because their pay was so small. To cap all, they passed a bill through both houses, to pay themselves in gold, and the governor signed it. After voting to pay themselves in gold and the soldier and the people in rags, and after their own republican governor had signed this republican measure, the members then called on the treasurer for the 'yellow boys,' — and the treasurer refused to pay them in anything but 'greenbacks,' on the ground that the legislature had previously appropriated the gold to pay the interest on our foreign indebtedness. They had to take the 'rags' or nothing. Served 'em right.
