"This is wholly untrue. I have been a voting democrat for eighteen years, and when I abandon my party, it will be to support some other man than Gen. Scott. I cannot now think of "rallying a party" for a man who, whatever his merits as a General, has no qualifications at all for a President. But I desire to say that my principles are not pivots on which I can as readily turn to the left as to the right. I am a Pierce democrat and not a Scott whig. I support Gen. Pierce because he is a true democrat; I oppose Gen. Scott because he is a whig; and were I of his party. I should withhold from him support as long as he continues under present auspices."
WM. HOWELL.
