Hails Plan For Fair Housing In New York

NEW YORK NAACP Executive Secretary Roy Wilkins expressed the appreciation of all fair-minded citizens this week to the New York Division of Housing. This Division announced a plan to advance economic and racial integration through the State's urban renewal and housing programs.

The State of New York, under this plan, will only finance urban renewal projects that are planned to improve integration.

State-financed housing projects built to relocate families displaced by urban renewal programs must now be planned so that they do not perpetuate existing patterns of residential segregation.

The NAACP, Secretary Wilkins pointed out in his letter to James Wm. Gaynor, state housing commissioner, has long called for "adoption of such a policy."

The Association's position has been based on the belief "that a state agency has both a moral and legal responsibility" to insure that its housing programs "serve to promote democracy." Mr. Wilkins said.
