Admiralty Islands
Somewhere in the Southwest Pacific--Cpl. Eddie Jackson, son of Mrs. Eliza Jackson of 827 Lynch street, Jackson, is now serving as a member of a Negro magazine company in the Admiralty Islands.
Every rifle, carbine and machine gun bullet, every mortar shell, hand, and rifle grenade, in fact any ammunition made to fit an American weapon passes through the hands of one of these magazine companies before reaching the soldiers.
Under combat conditions, the Magazine company establishes a base ammunition dump, and unloads, transports, sorts, and issues ammunition to the troops.
While serving with his company in Australia, Jackson was one of the men at work in an ammunition dump one morning when a grass fire started by a careless smoker threatened to send several million dollars worth of explosives up in one blast. Cpl. Jackson, with his men, never knowing at what moment exploding shrapnel would be headed their way, stayed and fought the fire, managing by their efforts to confine it to one small isolated dump.
A graduate of Jackson high school, Jackson, where he played quarterback on the school football team, Cpl. Jackson was employed by the Frazier-Collins Funeral Home, at 415 North Farish street, in Jackson. He joined the army in 1943, and was trained in Ordnance, at Camp Rucker, Ala., coming overseas with his unit in 1943.
